My unforgettable first visit to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim!

Published on 14 February 2025 at 15:47

My very first trip to Disneyland Anaheim was nothing short of amazing! From high-speed thrills to breathtaking nighttime views, every moment felt like pure magic. As a lifelong Disney fan, finally stepping foot into the original park was a dream come true.

I stayed at Best Western Plus Hotel, just a short five-minute walk from the parks, which made everything so convenient—I could easily pop back for a quick break before diving into more Disney fun. From classic attractions to new experiences, delicious treats, and that unbeatable Disney atmosphere, this trip had it all.

On Day 1, I visited Disneyland Park, soaking in all the iconic sights and sounds of the original Disney park. Then on Day 2, I spent the day at Disney California Adventure Park, enjoying a different kind of Disney magic. Two days were enough to experience the best of both parks, but I’m so glad I had the Lightning Lane Multi Pass for both days. It saved me about 5-6 hours of waiting time, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend it if you're planning your own trip and have a limited amount of time.

Let’s dive into some highlights of my unforgettable first experience in the Happiest Place on Earth!

Two parks, one magical experience: Disneyland Resort vs. other Disney parks

Stepping foot into Disneyland Anaheim for the first time felt like a dream come true. But as someone who's been to several Disney parks, I couldn’t help but notice the unique charm and magic this original park offers—something distinctly different from Disney World or other Disney resorts around the globe. There’s a certain nostalgia that washes over you when you walk through those gates, especially when you consider that Disneyland is the birthplace of all the Disney parks. And what better way to experience it than by spending time at both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park?

Disneyland Park: The original Disney magic

First off, Disneyland Park is where it all started. Opened in 1955, this park holds a special place in Disney history. The layout is compact but full of charm, making it feel more intimate than its larger counterparts like Disney World. You’ll find the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle standing proudly at the heart of Disneyland. Now, I’ll be honest—it’s a bit smaller than the grandiose Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World, but that only adds to its whimsical charm. There’s something magical about how the castle fits perfectly into the park’s design—right at the end of Main Street, U.S.A., beckoning visitors to begin their adventure.

A nostalgic stroll down Main Street, U.S.A.:

Main Street, U.S.A., is the first thing you’ll encounter when you enter Disneyland, and it sets the tone for the entire park. It feels like stepping into a time machine, transporting you to an old-fashioned American town. With vintage-style buildings, charming shops, and the smell of freshly baked cookies in the air, Main Street feels both welcoming and familiar. The street is lined with beautiful brickwork, quaint storefronts, and colorful flowerbeds, creating a sense of warmth. In fact, you might even feel like you’re walking through a movie set—because in a way, you are!

Disneyland's Main Street is much more intimate compared to the larger, sprawling avenues of Disney World, which makes it easy to stroll down without feeling overwhelmed. And the best part? It’s not just a transition space; it’s an experience all on its own. Whether you're grabbing a classic churro from the cart or checking out the stunning window displays, Main Street perfectly captures the nostalgic essence of Disneyland.

Exploring Disneyland Park: A cozy world of adventure

The beauty of Disneyland Park is that everything is within easy walking distance. Unlike the much larger Disney World, where you may find yourself hopping between transportation options to get to different parks, Disneyland's compact size makes it possible to go from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland in just a few minutes. And even though the park is smaller, don’t let that fool you—there’s no shortage of iconic attractions here.

From the thrilling Indiana Jones Adventure to the hauntingly fun Haunted Mansion, each ride feels like a carefully crafted masterpiece. And the best part? You won’t feel like you’re running across the park to get to your next ride. You can take your time and truly enjoy the magic of each section of the park.

Disney California Adventure: A different kind of Disney magic

On the flip side, we have Disney California Adventure Park. This park has a whole different vibe, offering an entirely new kind of Disney experience. While Disneyland Park is all about that classic, nostalgic Disney magic, California Adventure brings a modern twist with a variety of themes inspired by California’s natural beauty and entertainment culture.

From the high-speed thrills of the Incredicoaster to the whimsical charm of Pixar Pier, Disney California Adventure offers a fresh take on the Disney experience. The park is more spread out than Disneyland Park, but it still retains a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. One of my favorite things about California Adventure is how each section feels like a different world. You can hop from the nostalgic beauty of Buena Vista Street to the vibrant colors of Pixar Pier, all while being immersed in Disney's unique storytelling.

Disney and the California Vibe

What stands out about both parks, though, is how each one celebrates Disney’s legacy while also embracing new ideas. Disneyland Park honors Walt Disney's vision with its classic attractions and historical significance, while California Adventure brings Disney into the future with innovative, tech-driven experiences. Together, the two parks offer a perfect balance of old and new—making it a fun experience.

So, whether you’re strolling down the familiar streets of Disneyland Park or diving into the adventure of Disney California Adventure, both parks offer something unique. Disneyland Park may be more intimate and classic, but California Adventure brings the thrill and excitement of modern Disney storytelling. And for those lucky enough to visit both, it’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness the magic unfold across two iconic parks in one resort.

Ready to dive deeper into the magic? Let’s take a closer look at my adventure in Disneyland Park!

The ultimate Disney ride experience

During my trip to Disneyland, I experienced some of the most unforgettable rides that truly captured the magic of the park. From thrilling drops and stunning views to classic Disney adventures, each ride left me with a smile. Whether it was the high-speed fun of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout or the nostalgia of Pirates of the Caribbean, every attraction had something special to offer. Here’s a look at some of my favorite moments that made my Disney experience unforgettable!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout – More drops, more fun!

I cannot express how much I LOVED Mission Breakout! If you thought Tower of Terror was intense, get ready—this ride has even more drops! The music, the energy, the hilarious Rocket Raccoon—everything about it is a blast. That being said, Tower of Terror still holds my heart. There’s just something about its eerie, vintage Hollywood aesthetic that makes it unbeatable in my book.

Incredicoaster & Mickey’s Fun Wheel: Stunning views!

The Incredicoaster delivered some serious speed and airtime, and I had the biggest smile on my face the whole ride. And then there’s Mickey’s Fun Wheel—nothing beats those panoramic views of California Adventure, especially at night when the park lights up.

The swinging gondolas, though? They got me good a few times—I definitely wasn’t expecting how wild those swings could get!

I’ve seen pictures of this iconic Ferris wheel everywhere for years, and finally seeing it in real life was surreal. Standing in front of that giant Mickey face, with the wheel reflecting on the water, felt like stepping into a postcard moment!

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure – A first experience

I finally got to experience Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and it was delightful! The animatronics, music, and bayou vibes were spot on. However, my heart still belongs to Splash Mountain. The nostalgia, the 'Everybody's Got A Laughin' Place' song, the classic charm—it’s hard to beat. That doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a stunning ride that will appeal to many Princess and the Frog fans.

The Amazing Spider-Man stunt show

One of the coolest live-action performances in the park! Watching Spidey flip through the air in a jaw-dropping leap? Unreal. The show was short—only about five minutes—but it impressed just as much as a longer performance would. After his epic aerial stunt, Spider-Man came down to chat and take pictures with fans, making the experience even more special for Marvel lovers!

Haunted Mansion & Pirates of the Caribbean – Disney classics at their best!

I’ve been to multiple Disney parks, but experiencing Disneyland Anaheim’s versions of these attractions for the first time was incredible. These two rides are absolute Disney legends, and for good reason!

Pirates of the Caribbean was the original version that opened in 1967, and it’s the longest of all the Pirates rides worldwide. Compared to other Disney parks, this version has extra scenes, including a mystical bayou opening, the eerie caverns, and even an extended finale. Plus, that famous drop into the dark? So much fun! The level of detail is mind-blowing, from the auction scene to the realistic water effects that make you feel like you’re sailing with a crew of mischievous pirates.

Haunted Mansion, which debuted in 1969, is another Disneyland original that has inspired versions in other parks around the world. The mansion’s eerie yet whimsical vibe is iconic, blending spooky fun with that signature Disney charm. Fun fact: The ride uses an Omnimover system (Doom Buggies!) to smoothly guide you through its ghostly halls, and its famous “Pepper’s Ghost” illusion in the ballroom scene still amazes visitors decades later. And let’s not forget the legendary Grim Grinning Ghosts theme song—it’s impossible not to hum along!

I think both of these rides truly stand out as some of the best classic Disney attractions ever created.

Shopping finds and cozy retreats

After all the excitement in the parks, I found that Downtown Disney and the Disneyland Hotel were the perfect places to unwind and treat myself. They gave me the chance to slow down, relax, and still enjoy that magical Disney vibe. Let me share how these little escapes made my trip even more memorable.

Downtown Disney: A sweet shopping escape

Downtown Disney was full of fun finds! My favorite stop was Disney Wonderful World of Sweets, a candy lover’s paradise. They offer a delicious variety of treats, from caramel apples and chocolate-covered strawberries to Disney-themed sweets like cookies, marshmallows, and cake pops. They also have novelty candy and exclusive Disney-themed goodies perfect for gifting or indulging. While I didn’t splurge on too much merch (prices were a bit high), it was still fun to browse all the cool collectibles and souvenirs. I couldn’t resist grabbing my very first caramel apple ever—such a sweet treat!

Disneyland Hotel: Rainy Day Retreat

A rainy day in Disneyland? No problem! I took a little break at the Disneyland Hotel with a warm coffee in hand. Sitting by the pool and browsing the shops was such a relaxing way to enjoy a slower-paced afternoon. Highly recommend this for a cozy escape from the rain!

Five of my Disneyland tips & tricks!

  1. Everything is within walking distance – One of the BEST parts about Disneyland Anaheim is that everything is super close. The parks, Downtown Disney, and the hotels, too. My hotel, Best Western Plus, was just a five-minute walk away—so convenient!
  2. Night rides are magical – If you can, ride the Incredicoaster, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, and Big Thunder Mountain at night. The lights and atmosphere make it a whole new experience.
  3. Take a midday break – Whether it’s grabbing coffee at a Disneyland restaurant or cafe, browsing shops, or just sitting by a fountain, a little downtime makes the day even more enjoyable. Maybe you can even take a quick nap in your hotel.
  4. Visit the Disneyland Hotel (or other Disney hotels) on a rainy day – If the weather isn’t ideal, consider spending some time in one of the Disney hotels. The Disneyland Hotel offers a cozy atmosphere with beautiful themed lounges and restaurants. You can also explore the lobbies and gift shops for a Disney experience without getting wet!
  5. Use the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass for time-saving – When you’re on a tight schedule, use the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass to maximize your time and avoid long lines. It gives you access to multiple rides with a single pass, so you can get through more attractions without the wait.

As I wrap up my unforgettable first visit to Disneyland Resort, I can’t help but smile at all the memories made and the magic that still lingers in my heart. Every ride, every delicious snack, and every moment of wonder made it clear why Disneyland will always hold a special place in my heart.
